From its War for Independence in 1821 to the U.S.-Mexican War in 1846, Mexico struggled to develop a governmental system that would allow a peaceful and stable transfer of political power on the national level. Real or perceived weaknesses caused by factional disputes encouraged European government to try to take advantage of Mexico during the decades preceding the war with the United States. These external influences and in-fighting between internal political factions had a significant impact on Mexico's ability to protect its territories.
